She wanted to break down, and cry, and scream into her pillow. But she had already done all three, and now she just felt numb. She felt helpless, so many miles away from her life that was unravelling quickly. She had avoided her brothers this whole day, and now she was just exhausted. Did they even know? They had too. They got mail too? This morning, her barn owl had nibbled on her finger during breakfast, and Nero almost spilled her orange juice all over the white tablecloth of the Slytherin table. Untying the note from Burrus’s scaly leg, she saw that it was stamped with her father’s sign. It could wait, she had thought. She was wrong. It was rather urgent, but she was glad that she had delayed opening it. If she broke down in from of all the Slytherins, it would have been extremely embarrassing, and she could see them teasing her about it for weeks. Her friends weren’t really the kind to let it go. Anyway, she had torn open the wax seal in exasperation, wondering what her damn father wanted this time. Was he going to beg her to come home for Christmas holiday? Because, as she had told him in her last three posts, that was definitely not happening.
Be careful what you wish for. Nero had always dismissed that trite saying, of course she wanted what she wished for, or why would she be wishing for it? But now it seemed all too real. Her first instinct was to tear it to shreds and feed it to the dying flames of the Slytherin common room. But she tucked it into her pocket, running up the stairs of the castle just waking up and getting ready for classes. And that’s where she was now, curled up in an inconspicuous corner of the fifth floor, holding the yellowed parchment in her shaking hands. It read:
Dearest Nerodie, This was something I wished to tell you in person, but as you refused to come home this month, I am compelled to send you this letter. Your mother and I have separated. It would be unfair to not tell you why this has happened. I would like to tell you that we slowly fell out of love, but that is not true. She has left me for another man, as she announced to be tonight. I’m so sorry this note is so brief, I have been busy with the various estate planning at Gringotts necessary to ensure you and your brothers accounts will be minimally affected. Please do not believe something drastic, as you have a habit of doing, like that love doesn’t exist, just because of the failed relationship between Romilda and I.
Love, Papa
She curled the scroll back up, tightly, knowing that there was no way in hell she was going to be able to take her father’s advice. Her mother and her father were her prime example of the perfect couple, a stable relationship that didn’t break and crumble like the ones she knew at Hogwarts. But now that seemed like it was all a lie, like her mother was just biding her time before digging her claws into the first available man that came along. She wanted to tear out her mother’s swishy, long black hair. She thought that they had been in love. She stifled an eerie whimper that escaped from her mouth. If there was no love, there was just lust. And Nero had never really lusted after anyone, with the exception of Fred Weasley that one time. So there was nothing for her. She wallowed, full of self-pity and fear for her inevitable future.

But heaven ain't close in a place like this Cassie hadn't seen Tristan in the past week or two. Part of this was because she was avoiding him, and part of it was because he seemed to be lying low after hexing that girl in Hogsmeade. Cassie didn't mind. It meant that she could go out partying. Partying had become Cassie's new thing. Though her family and her brother were big Elistests, Cassie was an elitest, though not quite as strict as her brother. She just wanted to party, and if the halfbloods were throwing the party, then she could deal. Elitest wasn't really her view; it was just the only view that she had ever known. Though Cassie would never admit it to her Slytherin, she had been out last night with the Gryffindors. The Gryffindors were people who wouldn't rat her out to older brother Tristan. She partied with Slytherin's often, but she had to be careful who was around, and which ones were friends with Tristan. It felt like she had a dozen older brothers instead of just one.
Cassie was wearing her dress from last night and sneaking back into the common room. She had crashed in the room of requirement in a large bed with about four other people whom she couldn't remember the names of when she woke up. She pulled on her heels quickly and headed down toward the dungeon, avoiding major hallways so as not to explain her slightly distraught appearance. She reached the dungeon and walking up to a portrait of Phineas Nigellus Black, she said the password, "Salazar Charm", and entered the common area. She ran her hand through her hair as she looked around the room at the emerald and silver decor. It was vacant. Most people were either down getting breakfast or still asleep in their dorms, which was ample opportunity for her to get changed and pretend like she didn't sneak back this morning.
She changed her clothes. It was a weekend, so she didn't bother wearing her Slytherin uniform. She wore her enhanced version of it, as she planned to go out in a little while. She had on a black and white dress that was tight in all of the right places. She pulled a Slytherin cardigan on over it and then pulled on some grey heels. She brushed her hair with her fingers, and it lay messily at her sides. It was bothering her and so she pulled it up into a messy bun, though pieces were hanging down in her face. She wasn't necessarily hungry at this point in time but she did have a massive headache, probably due to the amount of alcohol she had the night before. She had dark circles under her eyes and her eyes were a little bloodshot too. She tucked some hair behind her ears and she headed out of the girl's dormitory, she was going to take a little walk to clear her head before she had anything to eat.
She found herself wandering on the fifth floor. People were starting to wake up and head down to breakfast, or head back to the common room to get some studying done on their free day. Some people were heading to Hogsmeade today but Cassie didn't think she was going to go. She passed one of her Gryffindor party buddies and she smiled at them, and then returned the grin. The Gryffindor boy then accidentally on purpose ran into her, handing her a scrap of parchment. The parchment read, Room of Requirement, 6pm. Cassie rounded the corner and saw Nero there, and clearly upset. Nero was in her year and she was a gorgeous girl, but sometimes Nero lacked leadership qualities. Nero was often a follower, something that her parents taught her she shouldn't ever be, unless it was to a man. The men were always in control according to her parents. Cassie was just starting to learn however, that a woman can have control if she does it sneakily. She walked up to Nero and put an hand on Nero's upper arm. "Nero, are you okay?"

She felt unbelievably dumb for not seeing this coming. Sure, she was at Hogwarts for most of the year, so it wasn’t very easy to catch any red flags. But still, this was so out of the blue. She knew that it would hurt more, but she could not help but wondering who this other man was. Was it someone she knew, a family friend that had been invited over to dinner parties? Or was it some random person that was a complete secret? She didn’t know which way was worse. And she had no way of knowing, either, as Romilda didn’t bother to send her a note. If she was hurt, she wondered how her father might feel. He was either even more crushed than she was, or perhaps he was relieved. Maybe he was having an affair as well. The note managed to contain both too much and too little information. She creased it precisely in the middle, running her nail along the edge. She felt overly conscious of the beating of her heart and the filling of her lungs, concentrated hard on the little things that kept her alive.
She wrapped her wool cardigan closer around her, hiding her face in her shoulder. She wasn’t sure she wanted company, but someone to tell her that it was going to be okay would be nice. She spotted Cassie Avery strutting down the hallway, note clutched in her hand, and Nero tried to cover her face. She didn’t want Cassie seeing her in this state, weak and not quick to respond. Nero had spent her six years at Hogwarts kissing Cassie’s ass, and she got hell for it too. But the blond girl was just everything Nero wanted to be, but couldn’t. She was loved because she knew how to act, but like herself. It was a paradox. Nero had convinced herself that by copying Cassie’s mannerisms, that she would become Cassie, beautiful and confident, at least on the outside. It wasn’t going so well so far, but it had never occurred to Nero that she could be herself.
Cassie looked stunning today, no surprise, but she was also a bit worn, with dark bags under her bloodshot eyes. She looked like she had a rough night, like she had gone out to party. But it was weird, because as far as Nero knew, there had been no Slytherin festivities last night. “ Uh, I’m fine,
” Nero responded, brushing away moisture from her green eyes. “ You know, some bad news.” She gestured with the piece of parchment, already worn by her fingerprints. “ You have a note too,” she said, desperately pointing out the obvious. She didn’t want to share her feelings with Cassie Avery. The girl had a reputation for being a hard bitch, but that was really all Slytherins. [/blockquote] TAG cassie avery WORDS bleh.
